Biological growth coats and burrows into the pores of natural wood. In the Pacific Northwest region's generally wetter climate, biological growth decay may be the most evident for wood fence degradation. Despite prevailing overcast conditions a better part of the year, the region is not spared harmful UV damage from the Sun. Other areas of the country just enjoy less biological growth.  

A process involving cleaning and restoration is needed before applying protective stain. Eliminating and removing biological residue such as algae, fungus, mildew, molds, etc., are vital to the process with a chemical solution NOT high pressure washing. A brightening agent brings back the natural tone of the wood after cleaning as well as removes oxidized metal nail streaks that might be inadvertently highlighted by transparent or semi-transparent stains. Finally, and with the right equipment, a specially formulated oil-based stain is applied to help restore the wood's pH value and penetrate for sealing protection.
